CINEMATOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

16mm & 35mm Analog Shooting

From digital to film: an intensive workshop dedicated to camera operators, camera assistants, emerging DOPs, and filmmakers who want to acquire the technical and practical fundamentals of shooting on film. Two days combining theory, on-set practice, and lab work to delve into the analog shooting workflow, from camera preparation to processing and scanning the footage.

The workshop is created in collaboration with Rent Your Show, Movie And Sound and Movieland.

A hands-on experience dedicated to film cinematography

The workshop will take place at our rental house and will be divided between theoretical sessions and practical on-set activities. Each participant will have the opportunity to work directly with the cameras, exploring the operating procedures and the typical workflow of a film production. The course is designed for those who typically work in digital and wish to understand the approach, management, and methodology of analog shooting.

  • Camera preparation and loading
  • Exposure and film handling
  • Studio and exterior shooting

Workshop program

During the two days, the main aspects of film production will be covered:
  • Film theory
  • Introduction to analog formats, film characteristics, sensitivity, latitude, and exposure
  • Planning the shoot
  • Set organization, operational workflow, and technical preparation before shooting
  • Camera preparation
  • Camera assembly, operational checks, magazine loading, and accessory management
  • Lighting and exposure
  • Practical work on set with lighting and exposure measurement exercises
  • Laboratory workflow
  • Visit to the processing and printing labs with an in-depth look at the stages of:
    Processing
    Printing
    Scanning
  • Footage analysis
  • Viewing and review of the material shot during the workshop
  • Studio and exterior shooting
  • Practical sessions dedicated to shooting in different working conditions
  • Final discussion
  • In-depth discussion with the instructors regarding costs, timelines, and the use of film in contemporary productions

A workshop built on hands-on experience

The course alternates theory and practice with the goal of providing a practical perspective on working with film. Thanks to the experience of the instructors and the direct use of the cameras, participants will be able to understand the operational differences compared to the digital workflow and become familiar with professional tools and procedures. The footage shot during the workshop will be delivered to the participants in digital format.
